Blurb

"My name is Jemma Blackburn and I have a secret. I know vampires are real. I watched one murder my father eight months ago, and even though they tried to convince me it didn’t happen—that I’d lost touch with reality due to the trauma, I know what I saw was real.

Hollow Hills is now the place I call home. It was supposed to be my chance at a normal life. My chance to bury my secret and start over. But everyone around me is keeping their own secrets, whispering their lies into my ears like promises, and one of them is about to turn my entire world upside down.

I thought I had it all figured out. I thought I had the answers. I thought I knew who I was. The truth is, I didn’t even know the half of it. There's a reason these vampires are still after me. There's a reason they will always hunt me. Because I'm not human.

I'm the devil they fear and the angel they crave.
Only problem is, I don't know it yet.

INCEPTION is the enthralling first installment in The Marked Saga. A coming-of-age paranormal romance full of dark atmosphere, supernatural adventure, and jaw-dropping twists that will keep you guessing until the very last page. Perfect for fans of Twilight, The Vampire Diaries, and angsty Fallen Angel/Demon Romances."

Review

I'm going to share a spoiler because if you've read any of the reviews for this book online, then you know that Jemma is a vampire slayer. Jemma did watch a vampire murder her father, she was institutionalized because she told people that a vampire killed her father, she was eventually released into her paternal uncle's custody, and she seems to have a penchant for hot boys that aren't good for her.

The plot seems to be inspired by Buffy the Vampire Slayer because there are parallels between this book and the tv series. Don't get me wrong, I'm not crying "plagiarism," it's just something I noticed because I enjoyed Buffy

There is absolutely nothing wrong with the premise, and I appreciated it. The plot has a decent pace to it with a couple of suspenseful action scenes. The issue that I had with the plot is that readers don't find out much about Slayers. We have a very basic idea of the characteristics and abilities of a Slayer but, beyond that, we don't see any of that in practice. This leads me to the other issue that I have with the book.

The other issue I have with the book is its main character, Jemma. She is whiny and not the least bit clever, resourceful, or inquisitive. She allows herself to be kept in the dark about Slayers in general, whilst whining the whole time about being kept in the dark. The guy who she's crushing on keeps giving her mixed messages, but when his on-again-off-again girlfriend takes exception to him showing Jemma any attention, he does nothing.

It was incredibly frustrating to see the unrealized potential that the plot and its protagonist had. It could be that this is for a younger audience, and really not meant to be enjoyed by adults. I really don't know. What I do know is that this book didn't hook me and given the reviews of the second book that say the plot still hadn't reached its potential, I doubt I'll continue the series.
