Every year, a lottery is held for the hard-working people of Lutum.

The prize? Eternal life.

And everyone wants it. Well, everyone except for seventeen-year-old Silverstasia Blackwood. She doesn't think it's fair that the rich get to live luxurious lives, while the people of Lutum are enslaved, forced to work hard every day to support the immortals.

When something unexpected happens during this year's annual lottery, Silver makes a bold move that surprises everyone.

Now, everything is about to change.

Review

This book had my attention from the first page. At first glance, I thought it would be similar to The Hunger Games, but it is more than that. Some differences are subtle; for instance, not all districts are allowed to participate in the lottery. However, most of the differences are glaring; for instance, there is no love interest in this installment of the series. No love triangle, no swooning, no romance whatsoever.

I have to say that not having a romance in a dystopian YA novel is a bit of an oddity. It's a much-needed breath of fresh air that sets this book apart from the dozens of books similar to it.

The character creation is fantastic. Each character is unique and complex. They are described in detail and are so well-rendered that it's like I was reading about people that I know. The setting that the characters interact with is lifelike and intricate. It's not so detailed that the plot loses momentum, but there is enough detail to imagine what it's like for the characters to interact with the world around them.

I like that the plot was perfectly paced. It wasn't so slow that I lost interest, but it gave me the time I needed to familiarize myself with the characters and the setting.

If you enjoy dystopian YA novels like The Hunger Games, The Selection, and The Cure; I think that you'll enjoy this book too.
