One, two, the ghosts are coming for you…
Three, four, better salt your door…
Five, six, death and hatred mix…
Seven, eight, help will come too late…
Nine, ten, never reap again…

Seventeen-year-old Mattie Hathaway has enough on her plate without having to deal with the latest teenage ghost drama. The ghosts of eight murdered girls are out for her blood. They blame Mattie for their deaths. She has to figure out what happened to them before they make sure she ends up just like them…dead and angry.

Not only that, but she has to face the greatest fear of her young life, the death of the only person she’s ever loved. Can she let nature take its course or will she interfere and cause the balance of life and death to spiral out of control?

She’s out of time, and doesn’t know if she should trust Silas, the demon who has taken a very disturbing interest in her, or her father, a man just as evil as Silas. Either way, she has to make a choice. But what will it cost her and those she loves?

Review

I have mixed feelings about this book. I like it because I'm interested in seeing how Mattie's abilities have grown, and the fact that she's learning more about them. Her family history is rich and I get the feeling that there are many tangled branches on her family tree, which makes the plot even more compelling.

I wasn't happy to see that Mattie's spunk and snark seem to have disappeared behind a wall of teenage angst and drama. I was even more disturbed when one of the boys in Mattie's life went completely alpha-male on her, and she just went with it. I was thinking, "Where's Mattie, and what have you done to her?" I felt that the ghosts and solving the crimes committed against the girls took a backseat to the drama, and the creep factor suffered for it.

I love Mattie and I'm anxious to join her as she learns more about her family. I'm interested in seeing her abilities develop and her role in dealing with the dead. This isn't my favorite book in the series thus far; it's been wonderfully creepy and devilishly delightful up until this point. Perhaps a break from dealing with many ghosts was needed to remind us that Mattie is a teenager and, apparently, full of teenage angst.

The next book in the series is already loaded on my Kindle, and I can't wait to see what happens next.
