"She belongs to his command. But her light was never meant to obey."

Raised by an unstable mother and haunted by half-remembered visions, Aspen never believed the stories of angels, forgotten realms, or wars between light and dark... until the night she and her best friend are taken.

Now trapped in a world once shaped by the divine, she discovers that humans are slaves, angels have fallen, and a shadow is spreading across the land.

Assigned to serve the feared General of the Night Dwellers, Aspen must navigate a realm of breathtaking beauty and quiet corruption, where every secret cuts deep and magic always comes at a cost.

But as the darkness stirs something inside her, Aspen begins to wonder whether the memories she carries might be the very thing this realm has been waiting for... or the spark that destroys it.

Review

As I write this, I'm struggling to articulate how I feel about this book. Light Among the Shadows is so breathtaking, and I don't know if I'm capable of sharing how amazed I was by it as a whole. Please bear with me as I attempt to find the words to explain why I liked the book so much; without spoilers, of course.

Aspen sees both light and shadows and, when she and her best friend are kidnapped and taken to a new realm, she begins a journey that is heartbreaking and beautiful.

The world-building is spectacular. The different areas of the realm are described in minute detail while keeping the story flowing. The people living in the realm are bustling and full of life. It was easy for me to imagine the world that Aspen was taken to, and her interaction with the world was on point.

The character development is breathtaking. Aspen is a strong female main character in an impossible situation. Her body and mind retaliate against being a slave with every breath she takes. This drives her to take risks that were gut-wrenching and understandable. She was such a soulful character. The General is an intimidating male main character; both arrogant and intelligent. He is an amazing counterpoint to Aspen's brashness.

The plot itself fits the romantasy genre, but it's nothing short of genius. The author took a trope that floods the market and gave a stunning interpretation of it. It's truly unique because of the soulful, well-thought-out characters and the gorgeous world. It's a must-read for slow-burn romantasy lovers. I can't wait for the next book, and I hope to be among the lucky readers that receive an ARC of it.
